VDI-in-a-Box

VDI-in-a-Box has been discontinued by Citrix. As of 2016, this information is provided as a courtesy only and may not be accurate any more.

NComputing NoTouch fully supports Citrix VDI-in-a-Box, formerly known as Kaviza. VDI-in-a-Box is a product made by Citrix for the small and medium business market. It was created by a company named Kaviza that was later acquired by Citrix in 2011. Even today, many people still refer to the product as "Kaviza".

This article gives an overview of the different configuration possibilties. We assume that you basically understand how NoTouch OS is configured. Since most VDI-in-a-Box users nowadays will use the ICA/HDX protocols instead of RDP, the Citrix Receiver will be used - please see the appropriate documentation article about the Citrix Receiver as well.

Connecting to VDI-in-a-Box

When adding a server connection, the first thing to select is a connect mode (the parameter "Connection mode" of the Connection options). Several different connection modes exist to facilitate different ways of using Citrix VDI-in-a-Box:

  • Browser. Use a web browser to connect to the VDI-in-a-Box web frontend.
  • Citrix/One application or desktop. At minimum, you need the Citrix URL (see below) and Launch Resource name (the name of your desktop).

The Citrix URL for VDI-in-a-Box is usually like this: 

   http://HOSTNAME/dt/PNAgent/config.xml

Please make sure you enter a URL that points directly to the config.xml file.

Note: Older versions of NoTouch (until 2.40.350) had dedicated connection modes for VDI-in-a-Box. These are not in use any more, and we encourage you to switch to the aforementioned ways to connect to VDI-in-a-Box.

  • Citrix/VDI-in-a-Box. This will configure the Citrix Receiver to directly connect to VDI-in-a-Box.
  • Citrix/VDI-in-a-Box (Java client). The Java client was the most widely used client in the Kaviza days, and it still is. This connection mode is only available on NoTouch images that have Java installed.

In any case, configuration is straightforward. Make sure the "Connection target" contains the URL of the VDI-in-a-Box web interface and you are good to start!
